UPDATE
1.
On March 25th 2010 six A4T - Bare Roots Group volunteers planted
350 trees at Pacha Khan Community Park (in two groves) in Sean's
memory, in the village of Shah rake Alaskan, Shomali Valley.
2.
Najib Sedeqe, A4T Board Member, and his brother Habiba and many
villagers, young and old, also helped plant the trees.
3.
The holes were all dug ahead of time and villagers were paid to
help generate work/income for the jobless in the village.
4.
300 trees + 50 rose bushes were bought with funds raised for Sean's
Smile! The 100 Akasys, deciduous Afghan trees, were planted alternating
between 200 pine trees.
5.
350 villagers have each been assigned the responsibility to water
and care for one of these trees or rose bushes. It's usually the
head of each family that is picked and he shares watering the
tree with others in his family.
6.
A metal sign was made in advance and painted with letters in English
and Dari languages saying: 'In the Memory of Sean's Smile' with
"high regards from his family and friends"... (then
under that is written in Dari: the date and planted by Afghans4Tomorrow
& Bare Roots Group)
Before the villagers planted the
trees, they were taught about Sean, the Sean's Smile NGO fundraiser
and the meaning of planting this grove of trees.

Afghans4Tomorrow
(A4T), is
a non-profit 501(C)(3), non-political, humanitarian organization
dedicated to the reconstruction and development of Afghanistan.
A4T has volunteer members across the United States and in
Afghanistan. Their focus is on sustainable Education, Agriculture
and Health projects.
One of the initiatives of Afghans4Tomorrow and the
First Presbyterian Church of San Anselmo is the Bare Root
Trees Project.
The purpose of this project is to plant trees in rural and
urban Afghanistan. Trees are planted with the participation
of local community members. This promotes a positive step
in establishing relationships between the people of North
America and Afghanistan. Afghanistan is a beautiful country
that has seen many of its orchards and forests destroyed
by the ravages of war. Many of the trees that lined Kabul
streets and grew in urban open space and parks were cut
down in the civil war after the Soviet armies left Kabul
so that there would be less tree cover to hide opposing
fighters. Many other trees were cut down by urban poor desperate
for firewood.
